UW-Eau Claire is honored to host the National Conference of Undergraduate Research (NCUR) on April 13-15. NCUR promotes undergraduate research, scholarship and creative activity through an annual conference for undergraduate students. NCUR is unique because it offers students from all disciplines and institutions of higher education the chance to showcase their work on a national stage. And when that stage is located at our university that is dedicated to research, in a city that is truly a rising star in the Midwest, we have a fantastic opportunity to showcase what being a Blugold is all about.
UWEC is honored to be hosting such an important, exciting celebration of research, and it will be significant as an in-person event. Participation in research has proven to impact a student's educational experience significantly, both in college and beyond. The benefits of working on a mentored research project in college are priceless, from learning to solve real-world problems and problems to developing strong critical thinking and communication skills. 65% of UW-Eau Claire alums who participated in research said it helped secure employment. 79% of UW-Eau Claire alums who participated in research said it was a significant factor for graduate school admission.
The downside? Research isn't free. Materials, equipment and travel all come at a cost; student and mentor time are valuable. And many students cannot afford out-of-pocket expenses that may accompany their research experience, such as travel to offsite research locations or to present their research results at regional and national conferences. Inflation has increased travel costs significantly, making fieldwork and travel to present at conferences substantially more costly. And summer stipends have not increased to keep pace with what other summer opportunities pay. That's where you come in!
Your gift to the Mentored Student Research Endowment allows students to build their skill set by tackling real problems and questions that are important to society. And an additional bonus. If you give now, your gift will be matched dollar-for-dollar up to $5,000! From studying the potential for contamination of a family member by a cancer patient's drugs to examining how smartphones affect mental health and sleep patterns to exploring how groundwater contamination spreads, students genuinely make an impact through their research. But no matter the research focus, they learn valuable skills and gain confidence in their abilities in the workplace and society.
Give now so that all students, no matter their background or financial situation, can participate in research at UW-Eau Claire. Your gift will be matched dollar-for-dollar until we reach $5,000!
With your help, Blugolds will continue to change lives (their own and others) for years to come while keeping UWEC known as one of the best undergraduate research universities.
